  1. Excellent Folder 5 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Mar 2015

I recently inherited my father's well loved and well used 1964 Russell survival knife. I was curious to see if there was any information about it online... and just happened to come across the lockblade model.

The lockblade is a well constructed, nicely balanced, durable knife. It is a highly functional work of art, much like the original Russell belt knife model. However, as it is a folder, it is more convenient for city life where the fixed blade model would seem out of place. The fixed blade model will now be reserved for canoe trips.

    Grohmann Russel Folder.
First I do apologize for my bad english, I'm a native german speaker.I am as german as Mr. Grohmann was...
Recently I watched Dave Canterburys YT channel , he was talking about George W. Sears, also known as Nessmuk, and his book about camping and woodcraft. I loaded it down and I am trying to read it... there I saw a drawing of his knife, a so called nessmuk knife.the blade style was interesting, and I' m sure old George knew why he used such a knife. I started to search the www, but I didn't find any knife that would match. Most were too expensive. I came to a german site, which is dealing with canoes and bushcraft things and on the sale page I found the grohmann survival knife#4 piece kit, for an affordable price. Bought and assembled it, which was quite easy and fell in love with it. Carving, slicing, cutting, even batoning works great. And the scales fit perfect, no blisters no blood when working.
Am I a knife junkie? Yes, I am. I'am carrying at least 2 or 3 knives with me. But I think my boss will go nuts, when he's seeing me, carrying a belt knife in the office...(I'm working in an exchange office) Besides it's illegal to carry a fixed blade knife, if the blade is longer than 12cm. The grohmann is 14. Crazy german law. But that gives me the outlaw feeling when I'm out in the bush...If you are "transporting" it in a locked sheath, it' s ok. Crazy again. Anyway....
I discovered that grohmann also produces folders. Especially the russel lockback folder, with the same blade shape like the survival knife. So I was on the hunt again, but couldn't find any in germany. I came to the sharp shop and to Rob.He offers a perfect service, even if you are ordering from outer space, like germany. But now to the knife. I bought it "blind" . The quality is extra, double plus. Perfectly handcrafted, the scales fit perfectly as well, blade is really sharp. It fits in my hand like a glove. The locking mechanism is strong, it opens smooth, one hand opening is possible. If you are looking for a edc knife, don't hesitate...buy it. Just think of it's unique form! The sheath is also quality made and makes the knife carrying comfortable.

  3. Qualities of a full hunting knife with the convenience of a folding one! 4 Star Review

A very well Canadian made knife with a smooth blade and a very sturdy handle. The safety mecanism is precise and easy to activate. The shealt is made of genuine leather and give the knife a traditionnal look. It's a good cutting knife combine with the convenience of a folding knife.
